DC CHALLENGE HIKE & CAMP
BRADFIELD PARK CAMP SITE

OCTOBER 2011

This year it was the turn of Bradfield Combust Scout Camp site – Bradfield Park to host the Sudbury District DC Challenge. The DC Challenge Camp jointly organized by Karen Raffell (ADC) and Paul Snelling (District Scout Leader).

We travelled over in our minibus on Saturday 8th October and after arriving - it was then off on an observation hike around the footpaths and country roads of Bradfield Combust, St Clare and St George villages. Using the map, compass and route card they set off from the entrance looking at the scenery as we went along the 7 mile route looking for clues to the questions which they had with them. Paul’s team stopped for our picnic lunch at Maypole Green calling in at the Public House Fox and Hounds and sitting next to the pub sheltering from the light rain
(I brought them a coke each!)
before arriving back at the site late afternoon.

In the early evening - the Scouts cooked their various meals of pasta on their tranjia stoves.

After the meals we played a few games in the dark (wide games) - night sabotage, night attack and whistle hunt around the park grounds.

Afterwards we held a camp fire where Mark Miller and Graham Souch did their usual camp fire songs and acts. Afterwards we served refreshments of hot dogs at the lodge before bed.

Scouts were awoken by Mark Miller (SL) of Boxford playing his bugle on Sunday morning at 7.00am! After breakfast and flag – Scouts went around the bases of air rifle shooting, assault course, fire lighting, pedal karts, pioneering challenge, knots, traverse wall and archery. The points for the weekend were for teamwork, meals, tents, observation hike, archery, air rifle shooting and making a man out of conkers

The camp finished at 12.45am with Karen Raffell (ADC) presenting the certificates for Highly Commended to Bures, Lavenham, 2nd Haverhill and Long Melford. 3rd place to Hadleigh. 2nd place to Boxford and the winners of the DC Challenge shield to 1st Haverhill.
