Our meeting place: The Scout & Guide Headquarters, The Croft, Bures

 

Welcome to 1st Bures Scout Troop. We meet on Monday evenings from 19.00hrs to 21.00hrs in term time. We are a mixed group of boys and girls aged between 10-14 years. We sometimes run later, when going out (e.g., Rollerskating, Go-Karting, Windsurfing, Rifle Shooting, Sailing, Swimming, Abseiling or Visits etc). We do not meet on Bank, Term Breaks, Christmas and August Holidays. After our Summer Camp in August, Scouts will not meet again until September.

 

activities: We follow the Scouting programme and do various activities throughout the year e.g. canoeing, rafting, pioneering, knots, cooking on wood fires, climbing, abseiling, gliding, go-karting, quad biking, archery, air rifle shooting and visits. Many Scouts gain badges during their four years in the troop. Some of the Activity and Challenge badges undertaken are: Hobbies, Canoeist, Hiking, Entertainer, Master of Arms (using our 1.77 air rifles), Swimmers Staged badges, Nights Away, Survival, Fishing, Athletics, Cyclists, First Aid are just a few. Challenge Badges: Expedition, Adventure, Creative, Outdoors, Community and Fitness.

 

CAMPing: We camp from March to November,
e.g. Patrol Troop Camp, Lightweight Camping, District Camping Competition, District Jamboree, County Camp, Summer Camp (week in August).

Uniform: This can be brought from www.outdoors.co.uk (Scout Shop on line) or Greens Clothing, 5 Goal Lane, Sudbury (01787) 881500 or the Guide & Scout Shop, Guildhall, Bury St. Edmunds, opening hours – Saturdays 9.30am–12.30pm; every Wednesday 7.00pm–8.30pm. Long Sleeved Smart Shirt, colour teal green, Blue Activity Trousers and Leather Belt showing Scout logo are required. Optional: Polo Shirt price £9.00 (ideal for hot summer nights); Blue Activity Shorts price £13.00.

 

Investiture: New Scouts will be invested in four-six weeks providing, they have Full Scout Uniform and have learnt their Scout Promise & Law and History of Scouting (Scout Membership Badge). Badges, Scarf and Woggle are presented on investiture night.  Investiture will take place at the end of the meeting at 20.45 hrs. Parents and family are also invited to attend.

Subscriptions: These are £28.00 they are paid three times a year – January, May and September (total £72.00). Subscription money pays for all outside activities, e.g.. Swimming, Windsurfing, Abseiling, Tenpin Bowling, Rollerskating and any District/County camps and activities. The rest of the money goes on membership fee and insurance to Gilwell Park Headquarters (£28.00 per Scout), badges, books, transport, patrol activities on troop night.

 

ACCESS TO SHQ: Access to the SHQ by car is from the Sudbury Road entrance (B1508) just passed the cottages (Croft End). You must only access this entrance and exit via The Croft ensuring a One-way System is operational. This helps minimize traffic congestion. Speed limit down The Croft is 10mph. At no time should you exit via the Sudbury Road, as it is on a dangerous corner.
