FLIGHT IN A GLIDER
WORMINGFORD AIRFIELD, ESSEX
APRIL 2010

ON Thursday 15th April, we travelled to Wormingford Airfield, Essex for our flight in a glider. With sunny weather and high clouds it was perfect weather for flying - unlike last time in October when it had to be called off due to heavy fog.

We were given safety briefing and told about the controls in the cockpit and we each wore a parachute (hope we never have to use it!). A qualified instructor sat in the back to take control with the Scout in the front with ballast added for the different weight of Scout, Explorer and Leaders. We were winched launched into the sky and travelled up to 2,000 feet before the winch line was released.

We got to see stunning views of the surrounding countryside, Mersea Island, Colchester, Sudbury and Bures – but due to the low cloud we could not see Canary Wharf, London.

The flights lasted approx 15 minutes each with some of us taking up the controls and learning how to fly and some who were brave to do loop the loop! We would like to say a big thank you to the Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club for a great day out.
