History Part III, The 90's & Present Day - 3

The camping area near SHQ
We have been leased 3 acres of pasture and woodland near our SHQ, Scouts have started clearing trees and brambles ready for groups to camp, rafting and canoe. We have now joined forces with the Guides, Brownies and Rainbows in the village, they will be helping with funding raising and will meet at the SHQ on Tuesday evenings as from September 1999. We have managed to re-start our Beaver Colony and welcome Graham Curtis (BSL) and Andrea Carter (ABSL) into the group.
We have spent a large amount of our fund raising money on the SHQ building - decorating main hall, re-wiring, new lights, heaters, new floodlights and re-felt and cladding on the exterior, updated our buoyancy aids and bought a plastic canoe. Jamie Russell has now become a helper in the Scout section.

Weather Vane Memorial
We held a short Memorial Service for Graham Boyce (Boggis), Assistant Scout Leader in 2000 who died the previous year. The service was led by the Rev. Robin King - a weather vane in the shape of a size 12 German Paratrooper boot was dedicated in the memory of Graham. It was placed on the weather vane by his older brother Andrew.
Bill Snelling was awarded a Certificate for Services to Scouting by District Commissioner Heather Elliott, he has served as Group Treasurer for the past 20 years.
2001 - New Uniform, logo and sections
This took four years to implement and at a cost of £2 million. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts got a new uniform. We lost the Venture Section and gained two - Pathfinder and Network Scout Sections. A new programme is being launched this Easter 2002.
St George's Day Awards
At the last St George's Day Parade in Lavenham 2001, Paul Snelling and David Lee were presented with Long Service Awards for 15 and ten years respectively by the new D.C. Gordon Edgar.

What does the future hold?
Well, here we are 50 years on and still going - what an achievement. Scouting has never stopped, we have seen over 400 Scouts, Cubs and Beavers enjoy

their Scouting. What will the next 50 years bring? We are always looking for more Leaders and the Beaver Section has now been closed for nearly two years and we are still looking for a Group Scout Leader after much publicity. If new parents want their children to join the group and enjoy the fun, adventure and activities, we must have people to commit themselves to becoming a Leader or to supporting the group in its fund-raising activities. The Leaders are not paid and the group is self-supporting, it would be a shame if all the hard work over the years would go to waste!
If you would like to become a Leader or like to re-start the Beaver Colony telephone 370301 for more information.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about the Scout Group over the past 50 years and it has brought back many memories to the boys and girls, who have been members.
