District Mid-Summer Hike & Basher Camp – June 2019
On Saturday 29th June – 35 Scouts from around the District assembled at their different start points of either Leavenheath Village Car Park or Sudbury Lorry Park for their hike at 4.00pm to Lamarsh Park Woods near Daws Cross, White Colne – a distance of 8 miles. Bures and Boxford started at Leavenheath with Paul, Callum and Ian (Bures Leaders).
Long Melford, Glemsford and 1st/2nd Haverhill starting in Sudbury accompanied by their Leaders. Very hot weather – a bit hot for hiking 30C – Scouts had to carry their basher shelters, string and sleeping bags. The route took us via Arger Fen, Chapel Barn, Bures Mill, Mount Bures (Craigs Lane), Ravensfield and onto the woods. The other groups went via the Stour Valley Path via Middleton, Henny Chuch, Alphamstone and Fishpits with both groups arriving within 20 minutes of each other from 8pm onwards. After arriving at the woods – Scouts set about pitching their shelters and making fires for cooking sausages on sticks.
Scouts were awake at 6am in the bright sunshine – but still cold and to keep warm made fires until breakfast was given out at 7.00am by Julie Penney (ADC) – they cooked bacon and toasted bread over the hot emblers. After breakfast – Scouts striked camp and hiked back to Bures ready to be picked up at 11.00am from the Community Centre Car Park.
