District Mid-Summer Hike & Basher Camp
On Saturday 24th June – 70 Scouts from around the District assembled at their different start points of either Leavenheath Village Car Park or Sudbury Lorry Park for their hike at 4.00pm to Lamarsh Park Woods near Daws Cross, White Colne – a distance of 8 miles. Bures, Boxford, Hadleigh, Lavenham and Acton & Waldingfield started at Leavenheath with our Assistant Leader Eddie Gordon and accompanied by Boxford Leader Mark Miller and myself in Sudbury to help with 3rd Sudbury Sea Scouts, Great Cornard, Long Melford and Haverhill. Nice and warm weather just right for hiking – Scouts had to carry their basher shelters, string, tranja stoves, meths and sleeping bag. The route took us via Deadman’s Lane, Arger Fen, Gazley Gate, through Bures village, Ferriers Lane and Horne’s Green and onto Fishpits to the woods. My route took us along the Stour Valley Path via Middleton, Henny Chuch, Alphamstone and Fishpits with both groups arriving within 20 minutes of each other from 8pm onwards.
After arriving at the woods – Scouts set about pitching their shelters and making fires for cooking sausages on sticks. They used their tranja’s for making their drinks of hot chocolate.
Scouts were awake at 6am in the bright sunshine – but still cold and to keep warm made fires until breakfast was given out at 7.00am by Steve Cridland (ADC) – they cooked beacon over the hot emblers. After breakfast – Scouts striked camp and hiked back to Bures ready to be picked up at 11.00am from the Community Centre Car Park.
