Scouts

We meet on Monday evenings from 19.00hrs to 21.00hrs in term time at The Scout Headquarters, The Croft, Bures, Suffolk CO8 5JD. We are a mixed group of boys and girls aged between 10-14 years.

We sometimes run later, when going out (e.g., Roller Skating, Ringos, Ten Pin Bowling, Swimming, Abseiling or Visits etc.). We do not meet on Bank, Term Breaks, Christmas and August Holidays. After our Summer Camp in August, Scouts will not meet again until September.

Activities

We follow the Scouting programme and do various activities throughout the year e.g. kayaking, rafting, pioneering, knots, cooking on wood fires, climbing, abseiling, gliding, archery, air rifle shooting, windsurfing and visits.

Many Scouts gain badges during their four years in the troop. Some of the Activity and Challenge badges undertaken are: Hobbies, Canoeist, Hiking, Entertainer, Master of Arms (using our 1.77 air rifles), Swimmers Staged badges, Nights Away, Survival Skills, Fishing, Athletics, Cyclists, First Aid are just a few. Challenge Badges: Expedition, Adventure, Creative, Outdoor, Personal Skills, Team Leader, Teamwork and World. Be gaining the ALL the Challenge Award badges – this will achieve the Chief Scout Gold Award.

Camping

We camp from March to end of October, e.g. Lightweight Camping, Patrol Troop Camp, District Activity Camp, DC Challlenge, Wet Weekend, District Jamboree, County Camp, Summer Camp (week in August).

Investiture

New Scouts will be invested in four-six weeks providing, they have Full Scout Uniform and have learnt their Scout Promise & Law and History of Scouting (Scout Membership Badge).

Badges, Scarf and Woggle are presented on investiture night. Investiture will take place at the end of the meeting at 20.45 hrs. Parents and family are also invited to attend.

Subscriptions

These are £45.00 (January 2024) – they are paid three times a year – January, May and September (total £135.00). Subscription money pays for all outside activities, e.g. Swimming, Abseiling, Tenpin Bowling, Roller Skating and any District/County activities, Mini Bus mileage, badges, troop evening items and insurance to Gilwell Park Headquarters (£48.00 per Scout). The rest of the money goes on maintenance of SHQ building, grounds and cleaning @ £10.00 per head per term.

How to get Hoodie Points

You can get points from attending the following: Jumble Sale, Volunteering at The Market on the Common, cleaning the Millennium Bridge or the Cemetery Benches and Gate, Tidying up the Campsite (leaf clearing), Duck Race or something else that we might do as a Troop.

You get one point for every activity and double points if you bring along a parent.

When you have gained 15 points – you can choose a Hoodie from the Scout Store. If you want one of the expensive ones – parents will have to help out with the cost!

Access to the Scout Headquarters

Access to the SHQ by car is from the Sudbury Road entrance (B1508) just passed the cottages (Croft End). You must only access this entrance and exit via The Croft ensuring a One-way System is operational. This helps minimize traffic congestion. Speed limit down The Croft is 10mph. At no time should you EXIT via the Sudbury Road, as it is on a dangerous corner.
